Size: Precision-ground 1/16" diameter and 7" length (1.6mm x 175mm) electrodes, manufactured to exact specifications for consistent performance.
Performance: Features thoriated composition (Red Tip/WT20) providing fast, stable arc striking and a low burn-off rate, ideal for high-amp DC applications.
Application: Specifically designed for DC welding of carbon steel, stainless steel, nickel alloys, titanium, and copper alloys.
Quality: Adheres to AWS A5.12M/A5.12:2009 standards and is vacuum-packed to prevent oxidation and ensure long-term preservation.
Q: What projects is the 1/16" size best for?
Q: What projects is the 1/16" size best for?
A: This is a precision electrode. It is the ideal choice for:
Thin Sheet Metal: Auto body panels (20ga - 16ga).
Tubing: Stainless steel exhaust headers, manifolds, and roll cage gussets.
Fine Detail: Jewelry or metal art.
Note: If you are welding heavy structural steel (1/8" thick or more), step up to a 3/32" or 1/8" electrode.
Q: Why use Red (Thoriated) tungsten for thin metal?
Q: Why use Red (Thoriated) tungsten for thin metal?
A: Red Tungsten offers the most stable, focused arc of any tungsten type. When welding thin metal, you need the heat concentrated in a tiny spot to prevent warping or burn-through. Thoriated tungsten delivers this "stiff" arc better than non-radioactive alternatives.
Q: Can I use this for Aluminum?
Q: Can I use this for Aluminum?
A: No. Red Thoriated is designed for DC Welding (Steel/Stainless).
If you use it on AC (Aluminum), the tip often splits or creates a "dirty" arc. For 1/16" Aluminum work, we recommend Blue (Lanthanated) or Purple (Rare Earth) tungsten.
Q: What is the amperage range for this 1/16" electrode?
Q: What is the amperage range for this 1/16" electrode?
A: Because it is thin, it has a lower current limit.
Operating Range: 5 Amps – 100 Amps.
Warning: Pushing this electrode past ~110 Amps will cause the tip to "flower" (split) or melt back. If you need more heat, switch to a 3/32" electrode.
Q: Will this fit my standard TIG torch?
Q: Will this fit my standard TIG torch?
A: It fits standard torches (WP-17, WP-9, WP-20, WP-26), BUT you must have the correct internal parts.
You must install a 1/16" Collet and 1/16" Collet Body in your torch.
If you try to use the standard 3/32" collet that came with your welder, this thin tungsten will slide right out.
Q: Is the "Red Tip" radioactive?
Q: Is the "Red Tip" radioactive?
A: Yes. It contains 2% Thorium.
Why use it? Despite the safety protocols, many professional fabricators prefer it for critical welds because it resists heat better than any other type.
Precaution: When grinding the tip, wear a respirator and safety glasses. Do not inhale the dust. Wash hands after handling.
Q: How should I grind such a thin electrode?
Q: How should I grind such a thin electrode?
A: Very carefully!
Support it: Because 1/16" snaps easily, hold it close to the grinding wheel (use a drill chuck or pin vise to hold it if possible).
Direction: Grind lengthwise (with the grain) to a sharp needle point.
Taper: For thin metal, a long, narrow taper (3x the diameter) gives the best arc control.
